Montpelier Methodist Church
It is the oldest church congregation in Baldwin County. Having been founded in 1790 before the lands were ceded by the Indians. At the time it met under a brush arbor or a frontier home but it's name at that time is lost to time. In 1794 a fort named Montpelier was built on the Oconee about a half mile from the current site. The Methodists carried forth the name of the fort for their church. Sometime before 1843, one acre of land was aquired from Benjamin Hall for a new meeting house. This meeting house is on the original site and pictured here. The bones of the original church are intact, but most of the exterior has been replaced. The church office and Sunday School along with the porch and steeple were added in 1960. In the 90s a new worship center was added behind the original structure but they still do use the old meeting house.
