It was founded in 1820 on Christmas Day by Dr. Moses Waddell. Age 50 at the time. Dr. Waddell was considered one of the foremost educators in the young country. He had come to Athens to revive UGA, which was languishing badly at that time. The original sanctuary was erected in 1828 on Broad Street at the entrance to the University. The current sanctuary was constructed in 1855-56 and was renovated and remodeled in 1906.There have been additional buildings constructed on the church campus since then, but the sanctuary is still prominent.
