ATKINSON COUNTY, GA
This large historic marker stands on its own on property behind the Masonic Lodge and former elementary school cafeteria in Pearson, GA. The history and meaning of the monument has often been a mystery to school kids and adults. Some of our older citizens related that the monument was placed sometime in the early 1900s by Mrs. Berta Kirkland (1875-1956), a property owner and Pearson's mayor in 1917, to memorialize a cemetery that was unearthed when other construction began on the property. The property is owned by the Pearson Methodist Church now.
