Darien

On June 11th 1863, the Union military took torches to the undefended town of Darien and burned it to the ground. It will be remembered as one of the most controversial acts of the Civil War.The attack was controversial even in the north because of the wholesale destruction of civilian homes, including churches and schools.
Darien today is known for its picturesque working waterfront,a reminder of that time are these nearly 200 year old tabby ruins which once housed timber and cotton. Just a few yards away from these ruins is the breathtaking Darien waterfront, it is powerful reminder that even the ravages of war could not take away the serene beauty of the Golden Isles
