Old Home Within the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge

In the early 1800’s, European settlers began to clear and farm this land. The continuous planting of cotton caused erosion and soil infertility. With the addition of the Great Depression, there was wholesale abandonment of the land in the early 1930’s. The refuge was established in 1939. This is what’s left of an old farming home.
